New insights highlight how guest connectivity, crew networks and third-party access are reshaping cyber exposure at sea
Oslo and Paris, 14 April 2026. OmniAccess, a global leader in managed services and business-critical digital solutions for the cruise and yacht sectors, has released its Cyber Intelligence Report for Remote Operations 2026, examining how cyber risk is evolving across the highly connected vessels it serves.
These sectors lead the field in onboard connectivity and IT integration, often combining passenger services, crew welfare and operational systems within a single infrastructure. As a result, the report identifies a clear shift toward identity-driven cyber risk, with user-facing environments now the primary attack surface.
Continuous monitoring from OmniAccess’ global Security Operations Centres (SOCs) and additional cyber security assessments shows how risk is shaped by high user density, complex network integration and reliance on trusted access pathways. Key report findings include:
User-facing environments are an increasingly common attack surface, often exploited through compromised credentials
Trusted access and compromised credentials are now the dominant attack pathway across onboard environments
Social engineering remains highly effective, particularly in distributed crew environments and high-turnover user populations
These vulnerabilities allow attackers to exploit legitimate access pathways across passenger, crew and operational systems, making incidents more difficult to detect and increasing the risk of disruption to onboard services and operations.
Identity-based attacks dominate, with 69% of risks linked to compromised credentials, compared with 12% tied to traditional vulnerabilities. In highly connected cruise and yacht environments, a single compromised account has potential to enable access across crew, business and operational networks.
The report also shows that cyber risk in cruise operations extends to passenger data, privacy and brand reputation. Public Wi-Fi, integrated hospitality systems and complex user environments increase exposure, while phishing attacks increasingly target finance and administrative teams onboard and ashore.
In the superyacht segment, risk is shaped by smaller crews, high reliance on third-party vendors and more informal IT governance. High-profile ownership further increases exposure to targeted attacks, including data exfiltration and privacy breaches. In these environments, cyber security is as much about discretion and confidentiality as operational resilience.
“Attackers are exploiting trusted user access to move across systems, rather than relying on traditional, more technical vulnerabilities,” said Carlos Carbajal, CEO, OmniAccess. “Addressing these emerging challenges requires a more coordinated approach, with tighter control of user access, clearer separation between onboard networks, and continuous monitoring to maintain visibility and control across the vessel.”
